Textbook restrictions: What if Amazon says you can't sell a book?

January 5, 2023

You go to list a book. Amazon says it's "restricted." What does it mean?

First thing to consider: Are you listing in new or used condition? A lot of sellers are restricted from selling new books. That's normal.

If Amazon is restricting you from listing a New condition book, chances are good you can still sell it in Used condition.

What if Amazon is restricting a Used condition book?

There are a certain percentage of textbooks that Amazon restricts. It's a very small percentage, but this happens.

You can prevent this from happening in one of two ways:

  1. Before each purchase, try to list the book on Amazon. They will tell you if its restricted (simplest).
  2. Use the Amazon seller app. You can download this free app on your phone. It will allow you to take a photo of the book cover on your computer screen, and the app will instantly tell you if you're allowed to sell it. (Less simple, but still free.)
  3. (Fastest way) Use the Check Permission extension. Tells you directly on the Amazon page if you're allowed to sell a book. Highly recommended. Purchase Check Permission here.
