Are textbooks seasonal?

January 5, 2023

One of the biggest (and most expensive) myths of textbooks is that they are seasonal. This destructive rumor takes a few forms:

  1. "Textbooks only sell at the beginning of each semester."
  2. "Textbooks can't be sold 9/10 of the year"
  3. "I have to wait months to get paid because textbooks don't sell often."

Wrong wrong wrong.

Textbooks sell year round

And by that, I mean it: It's the very rare textbooks that has high demand at the beginning of each semester, and little demand the rest of the year.

Textbook sales go up before the semester, they aren't down the rest of the year.

So its glass-half-full, not glass-half-empty.

More great news: It's easy to prove

1. Zen Arbitrage displays Keepa historical sales charts in the search results.

And we link to the Keepa site for a broader view. So you don't ever have to wonder if a book is selling year-round: All the proof you need is right in the charts.

2.  Our 12-month average sales rank figure doesn't lie.

If the average rank indicates a book is selling, it's selling.

The takeaways
  1. Textbooks sell year round.
  2. Sales go up before each semester.
  3. Easily confirm books are selling year round with the average rank figure and Keepa charts.
